An Independent Guide to Buying Well in Bali

We exist to solve a common problem for travellers: uncertainty about what souvenirs can be legally and safely brought home. Our job is clarity and confidence, not sales.

Why We Exist

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

Bali offers a rich array of handicrafts, textiles and unique items — but navigating customs regulations can be daunting. Visitors often choose between countless options without knowing whether their selections will pass through customs smoothly. We provide the clarity that prevents unwelcome surprises at the border.

  • We say plainly when something should not be bought at all
  • We name the village, not just the craft, so you can buy at the source
  • We quote indicative bands so you can recognise a fair price
  • We check the rules for your destination country, not a generic one

Our Focus

Our Focus & Specialism

We specialise in guiding you through the markets and artisan shops of Bali to find items that are both authentic and compliant with international customs law. Our focus is the island’s core crafts: batik textiles, Balinese wood carving, and silver jewellery. These are steeped in tradition and craftsmanship, and they offer a genuine piece of Balinese culture rather than a generic keepsake.

By concentrating on those specialities, we can be specific rather than vague. We also provide insight into what to avoid — items made from protected wildlife, for instance, which are illegal to export and will be confiscated.

Our process is straightforward but thorough. We offer personalised consultations to understand your interests, and we collaborate with trusted local artisans and vendors to confirm the authenticity of what they sell. During guided visits we explain the cultural significance and production method of each craft, and we advise on realistic price ranges and how bargaining actually works where you are going.

For travellers who cannot visit in person, this website is written to be used on its own: the guides and price bands stand alone, with no consultation required.

  • Batik textiles — hand-drawn and hand-stamped, and how to tell them from prints
  • Wood carving from Mas, near Ubud, including what needs a shipping plan
  • Silver from the family workshops of Celuk, including custom commissions
  • What to avoid entirely: protected materials and genuine cultural property

We are well-versed in the details of Indonesian and international customs law, and we adhere to high standards of accuracy and transparency in what we publish.

Why We Do This

Craft Belongs To A Place

Everything we recommend was made somewhere, by someone, for a reason that predates tourism.

Offerings carried up the village lane. Craft on this island is made for ceremony first and sold second — that order matters.

How We Work

Who We Serve, and How We Price

Four things worth knowing before you get in touch.

Who We Serve

International tourists visiting Bali, from first-time travellers to seasoned explorers looking for something genuinely unusual. Bali receives millions of visitors each year; our clients are the ones who want to buy deliberately.

International visitors

Where We Work

Primarily the areas where markets and artisan shops concentrate — Ubud, Kuta and Seminyak — plus the craft villages of Celuk and Mas. Whether you stay on the main routes or venture further, the advice holds.

Bali, Indonesia

Honest Scope & Pricing

We give honest, indicative pricing advice. Prices start as low as IDR 50,000 for simple items and reach hundreds of dollars for high-quality handcrafted goods. Our guidance reflects current market conditions, with no hidden fees.

From IDR 50,000

What We Do Not Do

We do not sell souvenirs, take commission from workshops, arrange shipping, or provide valuations for personal items. That independence is the reason our advice is worth anything.

No commission, ever

Transparency is the point: you should know exactly what to expect before making any purchase decision.
